Centru is situated in the center of Romania, within the greater curvature of the Carpathian Mountains, on the upper and middle courses of Mureș and Olt. The Centru region is made up of six counties: Alba, Brașov, Covasna, Harghita, Mureș and Sibiu.

The number of the resident population in the Center Region on July 1, 2021 was 2,297,491 people, the population density being 67.4 inhabitants/km2. In the last three decades, the population of the region decreased by 19.7% , registering one of the most severe rates of decline.

The economic structure of the Central Region has undergone substantial changes in the last 10-15 years. The shares of some economic sectors such as agriculture, the extractive industry have decreased a lot, increasing instead the share of other industrial branches and those of the tertiary sector, especially. Currently, services provide 58.6% of regional gross added value, and industry 31.1%. The pillars of the industry of the Central Region are the automotive industry, the metal processing industry, the food industry, wood processing, and light industry.

The Region is home to Azomureș, the largest Romanian fertilizer producer and the largest energy-demanding production facility in the region located in Tîrgu Mureş. To present the size of production, the amount of fertilizers produced can cover the whole demand of Romania, leaving a significant amount for export.
